INQUESTS.
AN OPEN VERDICT. The District Coroner, Mr T. A. B. Bailey, yesterday continued the adjourned inquir* into the death of Ellen Douds, who was knocked down and killed in Lincoln Road on November 8. The case for the police was conducted by Senior-Sergeant Cummings, and 'Mr Dacre appeared for the driver of the car, Alfred Victor Smith. The two sisters of the deceased gave evidence. The three had just passed from behind a car town-bound, when a motor car coming in the opposite direction at a fast pace on its right side knocked the deceased down. The driver, Smith, gave evidence that he saw deceased and her two sisters making across the road. Two, seeing they could not get across in time, stepped back, but one went on, and was struck by the car. The Coroner returned a verdict that the deceased met her death by being knocked down by a motor car. Mr T. A. B. Bailey, District Coroner, held an inquest at Lytteltou this morning on the body of William Donaldson, a prisoner in the Lyttelton gaol, who was undergoing reformative treatment for three years, having been convicted at Dunedin of forging and uttering. Deceased was 30 years of age, and a ■fccative of New Zealand. He had died ■Enn the auxiliary hospital at port. A verdict was returned that death was f due to pneumonia, following influenza.
