All the rivers of Canterbury were re ported clear this morning.

It is understood that the Dominion 's new war loan is to be of £9,500,000. It is to be issued on the same terms as the previous one, and is to close on April 8.

The sessions of the Council of the Congregational Union of New Zealand were concluded last evening, when the Eev. F. Warner (Auckland) delivered a sermon on the "Creed of Creeds," and a united communion service was conducted by the Rev. Harry Johnson. The Rev. Howard Elliott, travelling organiser of the Protestant Political Association, addressed a meeting of Protestants in the Institute Hall, Rangiora, last evening, and at the conclusion of his address was accorded a vote of thanks. A similar meeting was held at Oxford the previous evening, when a branch of the association was formed.

The usual fortnightly meeting of tin Women's Christian Temperance Union was held on Wednesday, Mrs McKie presiding. The proceeds of the sale recently held by the union in aid of the Lady Liverpool and Red Cross Funds were reported to be £25. It was decided to hold a fruit-preserving bee at the booth on the show grounds on Thursday, March 21. A vote of sympathy was passed with the relatives of the late Mrs Greer.

The second flower and industrial show held under the auspices of the Darfield Horticultural Society, will be held tomorrow, and will be opened by Mr G. .Witty, M.P. The entries in the various classes number 500, and in addition there will be special exhibits by Mr T. W. Adams, of Greendale, and R. Nairn and Sons, Christchureh. The ladies of the district are providing luncheon, afternoon tea and supper. Tire proceeds of the show are to be devoted to patriotic purposes. In urging a uniform speed limit throughout the South Island for motorears, Mr C. W. Hervey stated at the Counties' Conference yesterday afternoon that nothing was more annoying than the variation of speed limits. At Ashburton a man had been fined for breaking the speed by-laws when he was driving behind a dray. Mr Cooney remarked that it reminded him that when the cars first came out it was proposed that they should have a man walking in front of them with a red flag. The funds of the Y.M.C.A. Red Triangle Day were augmented to the extent of £32 10/- as a result of an evening organised by Mrs H. Stuart and daughters at the residence of Mr H. Stuart, Middleton, on Tuesday evening. A very enjoyable time was spent, items being given by Miss McDonald (dances and Irish jig), Miss Pounsford (song), Miss Doris Price and Miss McDonald (Highland dancing), Messrs W. Price (humorous soug), N. Down (song), McDonald (recitation), J. W. Watson (song), D. Swanston (song), and Piper S. Smith. Accompaniments were played by Mr W. Lunn. The week-end sales of home-made food supplies at the Red Cross Sales Depot, Cathedral Square, will be in charge of the New Brighton Red Cross branch. Donations received: Mrs Haigh 12/-, H. S. Martin 5/-, Mrs Fabling 5/-, M. H. £5, Mrs McKellar (annual) £lO, G. L. Rutherford, Supreme Court expenses, £6 13/1. Ou Saturday next the Canterbury Automobile Association will convey the children from the different orphanages in C'hristchureh to Rangiora on their annual outing. About 50 or 60 ears are required, and at last night's meeting of the executive of the association the hope was expressed that country members would come forward and offer the use of their cars for the day. The executive confidently expects that members have only to be acquainted with the urgent necessity for cars for this deserving object to receive the fall quota required. A motion picture will be taken as the cars leave the Square at 2 p.m.. In the Magistrate's Court yesterday afternoon A. and S. Luttrell (Mr A. F. Wright) were charged with having altered electric light work without giving the required notice to the City Council. Mr Loughnan appeared for the City Council. After hearing the evidence, the Magistrate (Mr T. A. B. Bailey, S.M.) dismissed the case. Stanley Ockenden (Mr F. W. Johnston) was charged with having done electric lighting work without being licensed as required by the by-law. The Magistrate reserved his decision. Decision was also reserved in the case Emily Georgina Shearsby (Mr F. W. Johnston) v. Frederick Thomas Shearsby (Mr C. S. Thomas), an application for maintenance, separation, and guardianship.
