TURF TOPICS.

Despite the absence of several trainers at Waimate a good deal of interesting work was got through at Eicearton this morning. The plough track, which is in nice order, came in for general use, while the two-year-olds were allowed on the five furlongs of the course proper. Wrestler left six furlongs behind nicely in lmin lCsec, finishing up his task in good style. Adjutant went a good nine furlongs. Gamecock joining in over the last seven. The pair ran home together, Adjutant galloped the last mile in lmin 44 2-ssec. Missouri finished in front of Thames at the end of six furlongs, run in lmin 20sec.

Lovesick did a good gallop in getting to the end of six furlongs in lmin 15sec.

Long Bange and Sir Fanciful finished on terms at the end of a six furlongs run in lmin 19sec.

' Carol Singer had an advantage over Don Francisco, and Finland Maid, when finishing up seven furlongs, in lmin 34sec.

Lionskin east six furlongs behind in a pleasing manner, covering the journey in lmin 18 4-ssec.

Biplane's task was of a light nature, the colt being given a round at half pace, followed by trotting exercise. Heathercote, from a stand, galloped a useful six furlongs in lmin 184 sec. Disdainful was too good for Scornful at the end of six furlongs run in lmin 17 2-ssee on the grass. The latter was tried with a pair of hock boots on, as he has been knocking himself, but the experiment was not a success. Battle Eve had too much pace for Jeannot when finishing a six furlongs' gallop in lmin 18 2-ssec. Margeriue, with a light weight up, got to the end of seven furlongs in good style, .finishing up her task in lmin SOsec.

Daytime finished several lengths in front of Tremena at the conclusion of five furlongs, run in lmin 3sec. Killjoy was much too good for Partisan at the end of six furlongs, run in lmin 15 2-ssec.

Gay Lad covered six furlongs in lmin 18sec, and Hylans got to the end of a mile in lmin Slsec. Fiery Cross and Glendower finished together at the end of six furlongs, run in lmin 16 2-ssoe. Both wound up their tasks in resolute style, and are very well. Phil May finished up his task of six furlongs in lmin 17 2-ssec in good style. Love Token just headed off Kimholton at the business end of five furlongs, which was run in lmin 4 3-ssec.

• Wellwood and Vascular were given a couple of rounds of steady pacing. The latter will not be racing at the Southland meeting.

A recent addition to the active brigade at Eiccarton is Sir Dove, who is beiug got ready for winter racing by F. D. Jones.

Eeports from Yaldhurst credit Almoner with having gone on the right way since his last appearance at Eiccarton. He is being got ready for the Champagne and Challenge Stakes, and a meeting between him and Biplane in the latter event should be one of the most interesting events at the C.J.C. meeting. Wardancer is not being persevered with at present, and it is doubtful if he will sport silk again this season.

The latest withdrawal from the Great Easter Handicap is Gazique, who was relieved of his engagement at 3.30 p.m. yesterday. This suggosts that the soil of Gazcley will be in attendance at the Auckland Racing Club's Easter meeting.

Parisian Diamond will not be brought south for the C.J.C. meeting, but goes to Auckland for the Easter Handicap. It is reported that H. Gray's services have been retained for him.

A full sister to Informal has just been broken in by J. Lowe at Trentham. She is rather on the small side, but gives just as much promise as did her rolative. Lowe will shortly take in hand the Solferino—lntelligence colt, and tke Martian—Grand Opera colt purchased in Christchureh at the November sales.

Owners should bear in mind that acceptances for the Great Easter and Great Autumn Handicaps, and forfeits for the Champagne Stakes and Challenge Stakes close to-morrow evening. At the same time general entries must be in for the minor events at the C.J.C. Autumn meeting. As a rule the progeny of Boniform are not above the average size, but one of their number in the three-year-old daughter of Dreamer is credited with being amongst the biggest juveniles ever trained at Trentham. When first purchased she was turned out through being on the small side, but during the interim has grown to such an extent as to be well above the average build of three-year-olds. After making second payment seven highly-bred three-year-olds remain in the Champion Stakes, which looks like providing one of the most attractive items at the N.Z. Metropolitan Trotting Club's Easter meeting. All of them have already raced while four of their number in President Wilson, Albert Cling, Lunsdale, and Queen Chimes, can claim winning honours. Past form favours the prospects of President Wilson and Albert Cling, but several of the others can be relied on to show vastly improved form.

Several Canterbury trainers intend racing their charges at Addington on the 30th inst., and then hurrying north to assist at the Waimate Plains "fixture on April Ist. The closeness of the two meetings will prevent horses racing at both.

The entries received last evening for the N.Z. Metropolitan Trotting Club's Easter meeting were of a satisfactory nature. A baker's dozen figure in the big harness event, and as the list includes such great performers as Cathedral Chimes, Agathos, John Dillon, Adelaide Direct, Moneymaker, and Erin's King, there can be no doubt as to its success.

Another very interesting event at the fixture is bound to be the Trotters' Handicap, which,, has drawn ten high-

class free-legged horses, all capable of going two miles in 4.47 or better. As usual the mile events have rilled particularly well, also the two slow class handicaps. The big track at Addington was in excellent order this morning, but nothing beyond jogging and sprinting tasks were indulged in. Never in any previous year has the track work been so interesting on the eve of a big meeting.

After doing a light stud season, Our Thorpe has been put into work again by A. Fleming, and may be seen out in the Ilalswell Handicap at the New Zealand Metropolitan Meeting. Though the speedy son of O.Y.M. cannot be at his best he may still be capable of running out a solid mile and a-quarter.

At Canterbury Park E. Franks and N. Price both have useful teams in work for the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club's Meeting. Amongst the regular attendants on the track are Oiuako, Bridgewood, and Imperial Crown, all of whom look really well. As usual, J. Bryce is the biggest contributor in the matter of entries for the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club's Easter Meeting. His stable is represented in nearly every event, and in several races he has two and three horses engaged. Don Caesar has not done a great deal of work since being recommissioned by E. Allan. His mission at the forthcoming meeting will be the High-class Handicap, the distance of which should be to his liking. . A. Fleming has evidently tired of racing his great trotter, Hardy Wilkes, against the pacers, with the result that there is not a free-legged horse included in the field for the big event at the Metropolitan Meeting. The Australianbred horse figures amongst the entrants for the Trotters' Handicap, in which he will be required to give away lengthy starts.

J. Bryce lias Queen Chimes engaged in the Champion Stakes at Addington and the Taranaki Stakes at Hawera. It is quite likely that she will contest the latter event, which looks well within her capabilities. H. Gray has contracted to ride at Paeroa on Saturday next, and Opunake on the Monday. This will entail some speedy travelling on his part. He will join the Auckland-Wellington express on the Sunday, and on arrival at Marton next morning will undertake a motor trip over 100 miles in an attempt to reach Opunake in time to complete arrangements.
