SCHOOLS LIFE-SAVING COMPETITIONS.
At the last monthly meeting of the Canterbury Head Centre of the lio.val Lifesaving Society, in response to a letter from Mr J. Wyn Irwin, the chairman (Mr S. K. Uassctt) appealed for some generous "patron to give a shield or cup for a primary schools competition, and so permit of the Sir John Hall Shield being competed for by secondary schools only. If had been tound that the former were at a disadvantage in competition with the secondary schools, who had a greater selection of boys about the age of 14 to choose from. A silver eup has now been given for competition amongst the primary schools. The Head Centre has decided that the winning team in the primary competition shall receive bronze medals, and the winners of the Sir John Halt Shield silver medals. The conditions for the first shall he as laid down for the society's elementary certificate, and the latter for the proficiency certificate according to the society's handbook. Members of competing teams would at the same time be taken as entering for ihe examinations, and on satisfactorily passing the test in the competition would be awarded the elementary or proficiency certificates. It has been decided to hold the senior competition at the Municipal Tepid Bath on Wednesday, March 2S, and the junior on Thursday, Anvil 5. Entries, which are free, are expected from all over Canterbury, including Timaru, and close with the lion, secretary at the baths on the previous Saturday.
