SLAUGHTERMEN ON STRIKE. WAIROA (H. 8.), March S. A strike occurred in the Wairoa Freezing Company's works today. Whilst the men were being paid at one o'clock, a ■worker informed the manager of the Company that he had been appointed a delegate for the slaughtermen's assistants, and that they demanded 1/<i for general hands, the same pay as obtains in the f'.isborne and Hawkc's Bay works. After pay, the mansif ?r met the men, v.ho had then ceased -work, and informed them that he had information that the pay here was exactly similar to that ruling elsewhere, but as they considered Ihe rate there was 1/lJ per hour he would give this for that afternoon so that work could continue, and he would be enabled in the meantime to get into communication with the various freezing works, and if it were found that the rate paid elsewhere was 1/0 this would be paid from now onwards. Further, the pay would he retrosxiective from the commencement of the killing. The men decided that they would not accept the oiler, and that a definite statement of 1/6 per hour for the future must be. given. They demanded immediate attention to their claim, failing which they would stop work. The. men walked out of the slaughter-house, leaving the sheep hanging on the rails, without a moment's notice, thus throwing out the rest of the workers. TIMARU TROTS. WAIMATE HANDICAP, of 90 soys.
