THE WEATHER.

GENEROUS RAINFALL. Within the la3t week the weather has taken a decided turn for the better, and a very noticeable and appreciated change has come over the country, to say nothing of the city, where the dryness and oppressive heat was having a bad effect on gardens and lawns. At times during the last few days there has been even a foretaste of autumn in the air, although there as few signs of this otherwise as yet. The barometer this morning was quite steady, so probably tho rain is all over. The amount that has fallen has been of immense benefit, and was just what was wanted in town and country alike. The total fall of rain registered in Christchurch for the week up to this morning was o.BBBin.

Last evening there was a cold breeze from the south-west, with rain threatening, but, with tfne exception of a light shower or so about 5 p.m., there was no rain until 11 p.m., when it started to come down in earnest, and lasted intermittently until nearly 4 o'clock this morning. During that time over an eighth of an inch fell, or .140 in, mostly in the early morning. On Saturday rain commenced at about 2 o'clock in the afternoon, and rained off and on for about 12 hours. The total fall registered was .353 in. It is well that harvesting is forward, the spell of dry weather having helped the work along, and farmers will not bo greatly put about now, whilo the benefit that rape and turnip crops, besides the pastures, will derive must quite outweigh all other considerations.

RAINFALL. The following falls are reported by Sun correspondents:— Points. Waipara .. .. 78 Rakaia .. .. .. G3 Mcthvcn ~ . . 39 Ashburton .. ..23 WEATHER-FORECAST. Wind: The indications are for westerly winds, strong to gale at times, and backing by west to south. Weather: The weather appears likely to be cloudy and unsettled, with rain following. Barometer: Unsteady.
