ASHBURTON.
NEWS AND NOTES. The third performance of "lolanthe" look place last evening. Tiie theatre was crowded to the doors long before the rise of the curtain. In consequence of the large attendance it has been decided to stage the opera again to-night. The prices for admittance have been reduced to 3/-, 2/-. and 1/-, thus allowing all to see what, is perhaps one of the finest stage performances yet. seen in Ashburton. Last night's" effort was characterised by a dash and vigour which was somewhat lacking on the opening night. Mr H. J. Chapman's characterisation of the Lord Chancellor becomes finer at every performance. It is estimated that over 1500 people have already visited the show, and a very handsome sum will be raised for the Red Cross Fund. A lonely cow located in a paddock near a thickly populated area on the western side of the borough has, during the past few nights, disturbed the slumbers of many a tired resident in the vicinity by blatant bellowing, which it has kept up with relentless persistency from sunset to sunrise. It has been suggested that the member of the bovine family is either assisting its owner to enter a protest against the butter-fat test, or is objecting to occupying a field which had been locked upon \>y some j members of the Borough Council as a highly desirable site for the new Bor-I ough School.
