RIFLE SHOOTING.
THE RAKAIA CADETS.
On Wednesday a shooting match in connection with No. iI2 Company <.)" Cadets, Ashburton district, was held at Rakaia. The match was lived under service conditions, being a 10 rounds shoot. The winner turned up in Cadet J. O'Sullivan, with a score of 3S. 31 of which were off the rifle. The best performance was put up by Corporal G. Shannon (scr), with a score of 37 out of a possible 10. Fagan .. .. 2S 3 31 After the shooting match a most interesting gathering took place at the residence of the Hon. C. A. C. Hardy, M.L.C. The company was put through some evolutions by Sergeant Major G. Willers. An inspection of Hie parade was made by Lieutenant d'A. S. L. Grut, who is in charge of the Ashburton district. The Hon. C. A. C. Hardy, addressing the lads, impressed on them the value of strict discipline. As one who had been very fond of the old School Cadets, he was sorry that the system had been abolished. He had been told by schoolmasters that to find a school with good discipline one had only to And a school where the Cadet system obtained. The Godley Cup, which for the year ending May 31, 1916, was won by Cadet J. 1). T. Cornelius, was presented by Mrs J. Penny. A medal accompanied the challenge cup. The Rev. W. T. Todd urged the Cadets to live up to the great name made by their comrades the Anzaes at the front. They should be modest, courteous, and courageous. Mrs Oxley presented the cup which MiHardy had given as n prize for the match shot off that day, and won by Cadet John O'Sullivan. Mrs Blakiston presented Corporal G. Shannon with the medal for second prize. Sergeant-Major Willers stated that the shooting that day of the first year Cadets had been exceptionally good—distinctly above the average. The Rev. li. N. Blakiston related some of his experiences with the old Snider rifle, and urged the Cadets, if they wished to be come marksmen, to avoid smoking aud drinking. Lieutenant d'A. S. 1.. Grut stated that the reports of the Rakaia Company were invariably good, and better than some in the area. Afternoon tea was dispensed. Later on Lieutenant Grut thanked Mr Hardy for the pleasant function, and the gathering broke up after singing the National Anthem.
