NEWS AND NOTES. From Our Own Correspondent The Ashburton Convent held their annual picnic to Timaru yesterday. The day was very fine, and the children thoroughly enjoyed their outing. Mrs Mary Smith, Riverside, has received a. cable message intimating that her son, Private A. Smith, who was wounded, and who is in the New Zealand General Hospital at Broekenhurst, is improving. Mrs S. Nelson, Greenstreet, has received a cable stating that Private Albert Belliman, of Greenstreet, was admitted to the 3rd Australian General Hospital on November 21, suffering from neuritis.

Mr R. Reddecliffe, of Wakamii Road, has received advice that his son, Private F. J. Reddecliffe, has been admitted to the London General Hospital on November 21, suffering from a bomb wound in the chest.

Mr G. 11. Tilson, Hinds, has received Bilvififl that his brother, Private W. R. Tilson, who had previously received eight bullet, wounds in the thigh, had been removed to a convalescent depot at ITornchurch on November 22.

The monthly meeting of the Ashburton committee of the Pltmket Society was held on Monday. The principal business related to the resignation of Nurse Hancock and the appointment of a successor. It was decided to appoint Nurse Hadecke, who is at present engaged at the Karitane Home at Dunedin, to the position. Nurse Hancock agreed to carry out the duties till Nurse Hadecke could come to Ashburton. Letters of thanks were received from Lady Jellicoe and the Hon. T. Mackenzie, in acknowledgment of cases of clothing forwarded to Loudon per s.s. Mamari.

At the Police Court,to-dav, before Messrs R. Clark and 11. A. Lloyd, J.P.'s, Joseph Black, alias Brown, was convicted and discharged for drunkenness, and was sentenced to one month's imprisonment for using obscene language.
