A VAGRANCY CHARGE.
ACCUSED'S MATRIMONIAL INTENTIONS. A charge of being an idle and disorderly person, in that he had no lawful visible means of support, was preferred against Richard Carney at the Magistrate's Court to-dav before Messrs K. Mathieson and 11. A. Bruce, J.P.'s. The accused pleaded not guilty and was represented by Mr Hunter. Evidence was given for the prosecution by the police and Miss Cardale. Richard Carney gave evidence that he was a farrier, and he produced a reference from previous employers, lie had been working until a month ago. He only rented a room from Mrs Johanson who was a decent hard-working woman. Ada Johanson, a widow and a Native, said that her husband died about 12 months ago. Carney had rented a room from her since July at 5/- a week. She also let a front room at 12/- a week and a back room at 1/a night. Carney and she had arranged to get married. The witness added thai she drew 10/- weekly as the widow's pension. She had never touched drink in her life. The Bench, after a retirement, announced that the accused would be sentenced lo three months' imprisoni mi'iil.
