MILITARY SERVICE BOARD
SITTINGS MAY START THIS WEEK. Although it is known that several appeals for exemption from service have been sent in to the Defence Department by men who have been notified under section 35—commonly known as the "family shirkers" s'eelion—of the Military Service Act, to show cause why they should not be called up, no appeals have-yet been received from the Commandant by the Canterbury Military Service Board. It is expected, however, thai some of the appeals will be received within a day or two, and that the board will start its sittings this week. Captain A. G. Pilkinglon, of Auckland, has been appointed military representative at the sittings of the Canterbury Military Service Board, and has arrived in Christchurch. Besides representing the department in the hearing of appeals, and, when necessary, opposing applications for exemption from service, the military representative sees to it that applicants who arc not granted exemption are passed on to the medical board for examination. He will be notified of all appeals.
