NEW BRIGHTON.

A successful meeting was held at the Mission Hall, Breezes Road, on Tuesday, when addresses were delivered by Mrs Wilson, of Whirihana, and Mrs Hamber, president of tho local branch of the Women's National Reserve. Mrs Wilson referred to the great work being done by the women of England, and what would have to be done to assist to win the. war by the women of the Empire. The meeting resulted in both active and honorary members joining the branch. The Ladies' Bed Cross Society had a very busy afternoon preparing aprons for the apron stall at the flower show on November 29. These useful articles find a ready sale, and the workers will bo well satisfied if they go off as well as on "Our Day" at the Pier Hall. A large parcel was also forwarded to the depot containing ]5 scarves, ?, balaclavas, - pairs bed socks, 2 pairs slippers, 6 pairs socks, 6 undervests, 24 face towels, 5 pairs underpants, ,'3 pairs pyjamas, and 1 nightshirt. The W.C.T.U. held an "at home" on Thursday afternoon in the Methodist Schoolroom, in aid of the Lady Liver-pool-Fund. The schoolroom was tastefully decorated for the occasion. Mrs Holland delivered an address, and spoke of the work generally. Afternoon tea was provided, and musical items were given by Mary Eastwood, Misses Spratt, Hoo" 3r, Holland, Hooker, Curtis, and Chivers. Many gifts in kind and money were received during the afternoon. Private Clarence Wyatt is expected

home next month on the Maheno. He left with the 4th Reinforcement, and went through Gallipoli, but lately was in hospital in England. His brother Huia was killed on the Gallipoli Peninsula. Private Herbert Knight has joined the 2-1 tli Reinforcement, and will leave for camp shortly. Private Knight has his eldest son fighting in France. On Wednesday evening the No. 1 Unit, National Reserve, paraded at the Christchureh Drillshed, and took part in the send-off of the 2.".rd Reinforcement. On Tuesday evening the Ladies' Miniature Rifle Class fired its brooch competitions, wdien Mrs Calvert (64) won the A. Grade gold brooch and Airs J. Aiuger (5"6) the B Grade. On Monday night, at Corporal Kibblewhite's residence, the Shooting Committee held a meeting, when Corporal Kibblewhite and Privates Hempleman ami Barnet were appointed handicappcrs. 'Corporal Burmeister and Private Buchanan were elected target, checkers, ft was resolved to increase the price of ammunition to 4.1 for eight rounds.
