RAKAIA ROAD BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Eakaia Road Board was held on Thursday morning. In the absence of the chairman, Mr 11. J. Harrison, Mr A. J. Magson presided. There were also present: Messrs J. Lanibie and A. Drummond.

In his report the clerk stated that the South Road was still in a bad state, as travellers would keep to the one track. Work had been carried out on the Chertsey township roads and on the Wakanui Road. The board had cleared of gorse the frontage of one ratepayer, who would be charged with the cost. The sump in Bowen Street had been seriously damaged by an excess of water from the race, and was in a dangerous condition. Some large boulders had been carted to the site. It was stated to be 40 years old, over 20ft deep, and the timbers were rotten. It was decided to have it repaired at once, using damaged half-pipes and boulders.

Correspondeuoe was received from the Minister of Railways regarding a site, for trucking yards, location of level crossings in the new railway yard scheme, and sign-posts at crossings on the Methven line. In each case the Minister stated that the hoard's representatives would receive attention. It was decided to enlist the. help of Mr W. Dickie, M.P., in the matters, also to write to the district engineer with a view to arranging for the board to meet him in Rakaia and go over the ground. Mr Edward Duncan made application for permission to make a roadway through the plantation adjoining his property, so as to provide him with another entrance. The matter was held over {ill the expiration of the present lease of the plantation. Mr L. Pluck wrote, asking that the holes and rids in Nornianby and Mackcy Streets should be filled in. The matter was left to the clerk to attend to. It was also decided to fill in the deep ruts in the road in front of the school.

The subsidy on rates, £IG6 0/I', for the year ending March lit was received from the Government, and accounts amounting to £E)S 2/1 were passed for naviuent.
