News has been received of the death in action of Private J. Readhead, a member of the Bearer Corps, who was curator of the Ashburton Domain. He leaves a widow, but no family.

Advice was, received to-day of,.the death in action of Sergt. G. W. Gutlirie, of the Ist Howitzer Battery. Sergt Gutlirie was a brother of Mr J. S. Guthrie, architect, of Christchurch, He was educated at the Christchurch Boys' High School, but did not develop his athletic abilities until after he hail left school. He was a speedv threecpiartor in the High S.-hool Old' Boys' Rugby football Club, am! represented Canteis bury in 1913 and 1914. He was a good oarsman, and, as a member of the Cnnterbury Rowing Club, had numerous successes.. Scrgt. Gutlirie went to flic front as a gunner in the 3rd Reinforcement for the Artillery. The death occurred at Waikuku yesterday of Mr William Morriss, a Canterbury pioneer, at the age of SI. |\jl r Morriss was born at Eaton, Leicestershire, England, and arrived at. Lytteltou by the ship Joseph Fletcher on October ]i:\, 1852. He was employed in connection with the construction of the road from Lvttelton to Governor's Bay and

Charteris Bay, and afterwards worked on the road Prom Christchurch to t'ap'a- : iiui. Six years after his arrival Mr Morriss permanently settled at \\ Taiikuku to Follow Farming pursuits, and was the lirsi to erect a house on the ! Woodend side of the township, the original building still forming part of his residence. Mr Morriss for niv»iy years I took an interest in school matters, and I served on both the Woodend ami "Wui- ' kuku School Committees.
