FRESH SUPPLIES OF MEN.
NEEDS OF ARMY, NAVY, AND WORKSHOPS. RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE BOARD. (Received October 5, 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, October 4. It is announced officially that the recently-appointed ManPower Board heard evidence on behalf of the Admiralty, the Army Council, and the Ministry of Munitions which proved that fresh supplies of men for the armies and munition factories were urgently needed. It urges the tribunals not to extend the periods of exemptions, which have been granted in 400,000 cases, and to expedite the hearing of applications for exemptions, of which there are 200,000. Regarding tbe dilution of labour, it requests the Board of Trade and Mr Henderson to confer with the employers and the trade union leaders to extend the principle of dilution, freeing skilled men engaged in private work for the making of munitions. Much of the labour now employed in private work must be diverted to Government production, or released for the Army.
