SENTINELS REDUCED ON DUTCH FRONTIER.
GERMAN SHORTAGE OF MEN.
DUMMY SENTRIES TO FRIGHTEN WOULD-BE DESERTERS
Batter's Telegrams. (Received October 5, 8.50 a.m.) AMSTERDAM, October 4. The Germans have reduced the sentinels guarding the Dutch frontier from one in every 100 metres to one in every 1000 metres. With a view to frightening aAvay would-be smugglers or deserters, the enemy used dummy soldiers, arranged 50 metres apart, along a portion of the front, which disappeared at daybreak. On one section of the frontier there are cavalrymen only. These are believed to indicate a great lack of men.
