Visitors to the Clarendon noted include Mr A. S. Mitchell (Wellington). Messrs R. Fenwick (Auckland) and H. Needham (Melbourne) arc among the guests at Warner's Hotel. Mr D. A. Aiken, general manager of the Union Shipping Company, arrived by the Mararoa this morning. Mr R. McK. McLennan, of the Union Shipping Company, was a passenger from Wellington by the ferry boat this morning.
Messrs J. D. MeCracken (Rangiora), C. Mackenzie (Geraldine), and W. Barrett (Tuahiwi) are staying at the United Service Hotel. The Lyttclton Harbour Board at its meeting yesterday granted Dr n. T. J. Thacker five months' leave of absence to allow him to visit America. Mr Thomas Burns, of the staff of the Wellington Post and Telegraph stores, has retired on superannuation, after having been in the service for 25 years.
A motion of sympathy with Mr J. J. Dougall, in the loss of his son, Lieut. W. K. Dougall, was passed at yesterday's meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour Board.
Messrs Wm. Reece (chairman) and Mr James Jamieson (deputy chairman), Stockton Coal Co., left yesterday for Westport on an official visit to the mines.
It has been announced that Mr W. H. Cocker, son of the Rev. J. Cocker, who is associate to Sir Robert Stout, has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Economic Socictv.
The appointment is announced to the position of Kaikoura representative of Dalgety and Co., Ltd., of Mr H. Stanlake. Mr Stanlake has been in the Kaikoura office of the company for some years.
The Otago University Council has been unable to grant the request of Professor H. D. Bedford, that he be allowed to proceed to the front during the University recess to assist with the work of the Y.M.C.A.
The appointment is announced of Miss A. Scully, supervisor of the Wellington Telephoue Exchange, to the position of Inspector of Telephone Exchanges and Women's Post Offices. Her headquarters will be at Wellington. Feeling reference to the death, in action, of Captain L. S. Jennings, a member of the institute, was made at last evening's meeting of the Canterbury Philosophical Institute. The institute recorded its sorrow and its sympathy with Captain Jennings's widow. Private G. Johnston, formerly of the Addington Workshops, was met last week by a number of his fellow-workers in the shops and presented with a wristlet watch. The foreman smith, who made the presentation, wished Private Johnston God-speed and a safe return.
