WOOLSTON BOROUGH.

MEETING OF COUNCIL. The Woolston Borough Council met last evening, there being present: —The Mayor (Mr J, J. Graham) and Crs G. Lilly, C. Hill, W. Fullor, F. Newton, L. Hart, J. Hobson, J. Richardson, and D. Mc.Rae. Tho Works Committee's report recommended that the services of the present sanitary inspector should be retained, and that he should be asked to report once a fortnight. The Works; Committee also recommended that accounts amounting to £lls 6/4 should be passed for payment. Tho recommendations were adopted.

A lotter was received from the North Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board containing a list of the cases of scarlet fever iu the Woolston Borough.

The Rangiora Borough Couucil wrote stating that the council had been recommended to take, as a model for its new by-laws, relating to drainage and plumbing, the Woolston Council's bylaw No. 1, 1916. A letter was received from the Christchurch Drainage Board, asking the council to forward the valuation of the district for the current vear.

The Lighting Committee reported that it had been decided to refer the Gas Company's letter regarding the company's proposed increase in charge for street lighting to £6 per lamp back to the council. In the ensuing discussion, the councillors considered that, as the borough would shortly be lit by electricity, the Gas Company's proposition should not be agreed to.

The Mayor considered that the council should not act hastily, and he said that all arrangements for electric lighting should be completed before it was decided to risk having the gas supply cut off altogether.

It was decided that tho Gas Company's proposition should not be agreed to. ' The Finance Committee reported that the receipts since last meeting amounted to £6B 16/2. There were credit balances of £915 17/7 on the electricity account, £1760 on temporary loans account, and debit balance of £439 13/2 on the general account. The Finance Committee's report was adopted. Accounts amounting to £1746 15/5 wero passed for payment.
