Sir Oeo. Clifford arrived from the north this morning.
Mr L. W. Ballantyne (Gisborne) is staying at Warner's Hotel. Mr J. Cullen, Commissioner of Police, left for Wellington by the Maori last evening.
His Lordship Bishop Julius returned from his visit to the South Canterbury portion of his diocese yesterday afternoon.
Messrs A. Burt, A. H. Allan, W. H. Pretley, A. Evans, T. G. Russell, and A. Perguson arrived from Wellington yesterday. Mr T. E. Mackay, of the Tirnaru branch of Messrs Dalgety and Co., has been appointed auctioneer at the Wanganui branch.
Miss Eggleton, a school teacher, of Southland, has been appointed to the charge of the Educational Department of the Te Oranga Home. Dr P. Hay, Inspector-General of Mental Hospitals, arrived in Christehurch yesterday from the south, and left again in the evening for Wellington.
One of New Zealand's best-known runners, W. P. Trembath, passed through Christehurch yesterday with the Southland quota of the 20th Reinforcement.
Mr W. P. M. Buckley, chairman of the. Canterbury Jockey Club, has been confined to his room with a severe chill ever since the first day of the Grand National Meeting. At last night's meeting of the School Committees' Association, the late secretary of that body, Mr G. E. Franklin, was elected a life member, on account of his faithful services.
The members of the School Committees' Association last night congratulated Mr A. Peverill upon his election to the new Canterbury Education Board, and wished him every success in his position.
Mr B. Whitcombe. at present accountant at the Gisborne branch of the Bank of New South Wales, has received the appointment of manager of the Marton branch. He will be succeeded at Gisborne by Mr A. J. Low, of Geraldine. In charge of Mr A. E. Flower the Christ's College football team left last evening for Wellington, in order to play in the annual tournament between Wellington College, Wanganui College, and Christ's College. Private advice received in Reefton by Mrs W. S. Austin, states that her son, Lieutenant-Colonel Austin, is now progressing satisfactorily in a convalescent hospital in London. He is now able to walk.
Advice has been received in Wellington that Sub-Lieutenant Athol Scales, eldest son of Mr G. 11. Scales, has been appointed lieutenant to the Dreadnought Barham, having passed his naval examination satisfactorily. Advice has been received in Gore that Mr D. L. Popplewell, of that town, has had conferred upon him by the Pope the Gold Cross "Pro Escelsia et Pontifice," a distinction which is held by very few people in New Zealand. The Makura's passengers on Monday included three doctors —two of them New Zealanders—who have been engaged in base hospital work at various places. They were Dr W. Young, of Wellington, who served at Malta, Dr R. Nairn, of Hastings, who was in England, and Dr T. Simpson, of Sydney.
The members of the - Fire Underwriters' Association met on Monday : afternoon to bid farewell to Mr A. E. i Moore, manager of the Yorkshire Insurance Company, who is proceeding to 1 England by the Rotorua to join the I Motor Service Corps. The chairman ' (Mr IT. P. Hopkins) and several mem- ! bers wished Mr Moore bon voyage and 'a safe return, and welcomed Mr Wat- ! kins, who will represent the company 'during Mr Moore's absence.
Mr L. F. de Berry, headmaster of the Ilokitika District High School, was present at last ovenii.g's meeting of the School Committees' Association, and was given a seat at the president's table. He spoke on the educational work that was being done on the West Coast, and instanced several cases in which Westland scholars had done better than any others in New Zealand. During the afternoon Mr de Berry visited several Christchurch scltools.
