OLD BOYS WIN.
CHRIST’S COLLEGE BEATEN AGAIN. Though they were not at lull strength, High School Old Boys played a better game than Christ’s College, on the oval al Lancaster Park. It was not, however, as good a display as the Old Boys have given in previous matches. Old Boys were soon attacking and working their hacks, but the movements were marred by bad passing and by hanging on. The combination of the white backs was also spoilt by the absence of Tench and by an injury to Smith causing that player to change places with the full back, Carrick. Aided by a strong southerly wind. Old Boys kept up an unsuccessful attack until a forward rush and then a free kick shifted play. H. S. Hindmarsh and then Tothill showed up in rushes which had Old Boys defending well back. Matson made a good but unsuccessful attempt to kick a penalty goal. Smith had to leave the field, owing to his injury, and Old Boys played without a fuli back. * Soon, however, Old Boys were attacking again. But the College forwards cleared with a good rush, and their backs carried the ball on with a passing rush from which Matson centred, only to find the forwards not ready for the centre kick. Another rush, started by Gerard, forced Old Boys. College came again, and there was strenuous play close to the whites’ line. Cowlishaw was pushed into touch only a yard or so from the goal-line. Old Boys soon cleared their line, though. In College’s next attack a fine open field was left by Old Boys on their left Hank, but T. C. Lowry’s careless passing and Matson’s lack of combination with his centre both contributed to a good chance of scoring being missed. For some lime thereafter Old Boys pressed the Collegians. Carrick grassed the College full back in possession, close to the line, and Livingstone had a splendid chance to score, but he failed to get the ball properly. Another fine chance was lost through wretched combination. Then Carrick marked in a good position, but Livingstone missed. However, a solo run by Livingstone took the ball close to the line, and Gray scored. Livingstone converted, making the score at half-time: Old Boys 5, Christ’s College 0. Second Half. For the second half. Nightingale came out as full back for Old Boys, giving the latter 15 men again. With the strong wind behind them, the Collegians came on to the attack. T. C. Lowry found touch a few yards from the whites’ line, and a passing rush developed from the resulting position sent Cowlishaw over near the posts. Lowry converted, and the scores were even.
Individual efforts by Parker and Gray gained ground for the whites, who then worked on to well in College's twenty-five. There Corbett gathered in a Jong pass very neatly and outpaced the defence, scoring an unconverted try wide out. Old Boys 8, College 5. The play ranged between the two twenty-lives at a very fair rate, but it was scrambling. After Old Boys had had the advantage for a time, College got into their twenty-live, where Matson had a penalty shot at goal from a fair position. He missed. Play went back to midfield, from there Gray broke away, badly missed by a number of Uv defenders, and then ran infield and switched the attack to the other flank. He passed to another Old Boy, who sent it on to Parker, the latter scoring wide out, with Livingstone in attendance. The try was not converted. Time was called not very long after, with the scores:— High School Old Boys .. 11 Christ’s College . . . . 5 Referee: Mr B. W. BriKan.
