BROKEN HILL'S PROTEST. ADVISES UNIVERSAL STRIKE. (Received May 9, 9.45 a.m.) SYDNEY, May 9. The combined Broken Hill unions have passed a resolution to meet the 'inauguration of any form of conscription by calling upon the workers throughout Australia to "down ! tools" for 24 hours. CONSCRIPTION OPPOSED. ! ATTITUDE OF LABOUR. SYDNEY, May 9. The Labour Conference carried a motion opposing conscription for service abroad, and directing all unions and leagues to oppose Labour members who support it, in order to make the matter the clearest issue between the forces of democracy and despotism. HYDRO-ELECTRIC SCHEME. TO COST FIVE MILLIONS. (Received May 9, 9.45 a.m.) SYDNEY, May 9. The New South Wales Government's proposed Snowy River hydroelectric scheme is estimated to cost £5,000,000.
