QUEEN ELECTION.

THE PROFESSIONS LEAD. TO-DAY'S POSITIONS. The positions of the various candidates in the Queen Election at noon to-day were:— No. 5. Professions and Commerce 1 No. 7. Wholesale and Retail (Miss Clifford) 2 No. 1. Industries (Mrs Walter Hill) 3 No. 3. Public Services (Mrs Palmer) 4 No. 4. Soldiers (Mrs Rhodes) .. 5 Two candidates, Nos. A and 7, retain the positions they held yesterday. No. 1 has gone from first place to third, while No. 5 has moved from fourth to first, and No. 3 from third place to fourth. A meeting of local bodies to decide whether a Queen should be nominated for the north, was held at the Rangiora Borough Council Chambers this morning. The Mayor of Rangiora (Mr C. I. Jennings) presided, and there were present:— Messrs J. H. Blackwell, 11. Tallott, L. Evans, Rev. F. Clark, F. B. Lane, F. Horrcll, R. Evans, F. C. Pateman, G. Rutherford. The chairman, in his opening remarks, reminded those present that if they decided not to nominate a queen, they would have to contribute to other queens, and that a lot of money would be taken out of the district which they would get no credit for, and he thought they might just as well spend that money on a queen of their own. It was decided fo nominate a Queen of the Norlh, and that the local bodies be asked to nominate a queen, the names to be submitted to a meeting to be held on the 14th inst., when a final selection will be made by lot. The appointment of officers was left over until next meeting. THE PENINSULA QUEEN. A meeting of the council employees of Lyttelton, held on January 29, decided that all employees should contribute from their wages to the Canterbury Queen Carnival on the following scale:—Under £3 per week, -Id in the £; £3 and under £4 per week, Od in the f; £4 and under £5, <)d in the £; over £5, 1/in the £. Such moneys are to be paid in support of the Peninsula candidate in accordance with the council's decision that Lyttelton should be grouped with the Peninsular Counties in the contest. The meeting also asked that the council should subsidise the total £ for £. At the meeting of the council last night, Cr Foster said the council should subsidise the amount, and that the employees should be congratulated on the stand they have taken in the matter.
