TO FIGHT THE FOE.
BRITAIN'S FIRST OBJECT. THE CONSCRIPTION PROBLEM. LONDON, January - 3. Mr J. Thomas, speaking at Bournemouth, said he believed it would be possible to come to ah arrangement to avoid breaking Mr Asquith's and any other pledge. The first object of Great Britain was to fight the enemy. We could quarrel, if necessary, among ourselves afterwards. Sir John Simon has resigned, but it is possible that his resignation may yet be withdrawn. One thousand clergymen are petitioning the Bishop of Lpndon to be allowed to fight. BRITAIN'S SALVATION. GERMAN PRESS VIEWS. LONDON, January 3. The "Kolnische Zeitung" says:— "Compulsion threatens to split the British Empire by causing domestic strife." The "Frankfurter Zeitung" says:— "The British acknowledge that their salvation lies only in the introduction of the militarism which they are trying to crush in Germany."
