NEWS IN BRIEF.
The Christmas season at Lyttelton was a very-quiet one, as compared with previous years. There are usually many vessels laid up over the holidays, but this, was not so this Christmas. The annual tea was given by the Ladies' Guild at the Seamen's Institute on Saturday. About 40 men belonging to the Maori and Mokoia sat down and were subsequently addressed by Mr Dearsley. Musical items were contributed by Misses M. Harriss, M. Bean, and Mrs Livingstone. Before departing, each sailor was presented with a Christmas comfort bag. The following is the result of a first aid examination, held at Christchurch recently, under the auspices of the St. John Ambulance Association, the following having passed and qualified for the first certificate of the association: — Misses Angland, Bettie, Black, Fitzgerald, LovelJ Smith, L'c Arthur, O 'Farrell, Robinson, Roscoe, Sage, Thompson, Beck, Durwavcl, Harvey, Hurley, Jones, j Shearer, and Bachelor, Masters Connell, J M'auger, Storey, Cartwright, Ivcrach, | Revell, Cotton. Miss Cecilia M. Calla- j ghan passed and qualified for the vou-1 clicr. '
Amongst those at present filling in quarantine period at Quail Island is a brown Irish terrier dog, with a history. He was owned by the late Captain Anthony Wilding, and was at his master's side in the trenches when the gallant tennis champion met his death. "Samson" sas named after the famous English aviator and daring armoured-car hero, Commander C. R. Samson. For a long time after Captain "Wilding's death the dog was kept at the St. Paul Aedrodome, Dunkirk, and was subsequently taken to England by an aeroplane piloted by Commander Cliilcotc, and was thence shipped to Captain Wilding's parents in Christchurch by the Remuera, arriving at Lyttelton some days ago. The terrier lias his name inscribed on his collar, and the words, "No. 2 Squadron Armoured Motor Car Service.'' SOLDIERS» PORTRAITS.—There are many will esteem a high-class photograph of you.
