A message from Sydney records the death of Mr W. W. Young, ex-member of the Assembly for Bathurst, who formerly resided on the "West Coast of New Zealand.

The Colonial Auxiliary Forces LongService Medal has been awarded to Colonel G. J. Smith, commander of the Canterbury Infantry Brigade, he having completed over 20 years of service. Dr C. E. Adams, New Zealand Government Astronomer, who has been studying at the Lick Observatory, California, for a year, is expected to return to New Zealand about the end of January. .

Mr R. A. Haydon, foreman carpenter at the Hillside Workshops, was presented last week with a gold watch, as a mark of esteem from the officers arid members of the car shop, on the occa-; rion of his transfer to Aldington. Captain M. E. Denniston, a member; of the Management Committee of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association,' who is leaving the Dominion as adju-tant-quartermaster of the hospital ship Maheno, was presented last week by his fellow committeemen with a pocketbook. •

The Very Rev. Dekn Hills, Y.G., received from the Bishop-elect, Monsignor Brodie, on Thursday, a telegram conveying '' choicest blessings to clergy and laity." Dean Hills states that the date of the Bishop's consecration is still unknown. The authorities are awaiting receipt of the documents of appointment from Rome. The funeral of the late Mr Charles Joseph Dixon, whose death occurred on Thursday morning, after a painful illness, took place at the Woolston Cemetery on Friday, the cortege being verylarge and representative of the various departments of the Christehureh Meat Company. Mr Dixon leaves a widow and on& daughter. The Johanna Lohse Scholarship Trustees have awarded scholarships for 1916 as follow: —Miss A. M. Beatrice Butterfield (Puketapu), Miss Kempthorn (Nelson), and Miss- Ismene Christian (Christehureh). The scholarships, which are of the value of £IOO per annum, and tenable for three years, are awarded to the daughters of New Zealand clergymen who distinguished themselves in art or education.

At a meeting of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association, held at Wellington last week, the secretary reported that there was. in hand the ruin of £2G for a memorial to fhe late Captain Anthony Wilding. This did not include a large amount collected by the Canterbury Association. It was resolved to close the lists in February. The form the memorial is to take will be governed largely by the response made to the appeal.

Captain Richardson is relinquishing the office of General Staff Officer to the Wellington Military District to take a post in the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, 3rd and 4th Battalians of which have been training at Rangiotu. Captain Richardson will be succeeded as General Staff Officer at Palmerston North by Major T. W. McDonald. On the departure of Lieut.-Colonel V. 11. Smythe with the 3rd and 4th Battalions of the Rifle Brigade, Rangiotu Camp will be under the control of Lieut.-Colonel F. T. Bellringer, of New Plymouth, who will be the permanent Camp Commander. ,

Mr George Loveridge, the well-known Taranaki footballer, who has represented the Dominion in Australia and California, has been selected as a field telegraphist, and will be attached to the 12th Reinforcement.

A Press Association cable message from Ottawa states that the Duke of Connaught has decorated Madame Melba with the order of Lady Grace of- St. John of Jerusalem, in recognition of her services to the Bed Cross Fund.

At the social gathering held' in the Oddfellows' Hall, Akaroa, on Thursday evening, the Mayor (Mr 6. Armstrong) presented wristlet matches to Troopers N; Pilkingt«n, G. Cheekley, G. Heminway, and E. Hammond, who are 'on leave from Trentham. Trumpeter G. W. Moore, youngest I son of Mr W. J. Moore, builder, of Peterborough Street, who is leaving with the 9th Reinforcement, was the recipient of presents from his friends, aiid his late employers and fellow workers, prior to< returning to, Trentham after his final leave. •
