PERSONALS.

Dr Miller left by the Victoria last night for Auckland. Mr G. H. Scales was a passenger by the Maori this morning. Mr, F. Cooper, secretary of the Canterbury Employers' Association, left for Wellington last evening. The Bevs. Cuttle, Wilson, Currie, Patchett, and Bichards arrived by the ferry steamer this morning. Sir Joseph Ward arrived in Dunedin from Invercargill to-day. He will leave for Christchurch by- the second express to-morrow. According to private advice received m Ashburton from London, Lieut.Colonel John Findlay, C.8., has recovered from his wounds. Messrs F. L. Stewart and W. E. Dodd, of Wellington, arrived in Christchurch this morning. They are staying at the Clarendon Hotel. Messrs J. S. Mclnnes, of Wellington, and L'.--Mills, of Dunedin, are visiting Christchurch, and are staying at the j United Service Hotel. Mr B. B. Morris, Inspector of Post Offices, is visiting 1 Christchurch on departmental business. He will remain here till to-morrow evening. Visitors to Christchurch staying at Warner's Hotel include Messrs G. A. Thompson (Waitara), F. Myers (Pudsey), P. H. Brown (Bradford), and D. P. Byron (England). The Bev. J. K. Archer, of Invercargill, has accepted a call to the; pulpit of the Vivian Street (Wellington) Baptist Church. Mr Archer takes, a keen interest in municipal affairs, aiid is at present a member of the InVercargill Borough Council. The Bev. Nicholas Turner went through to Wellington to see his son, Mr Arthur Turner, who leaves this week with the Special ambulance draft for j the front. Mr A. Turner is well known; in. Christchurch,. and for some years has j been connected with W. Suckling and. Co., photographic dealers, Christchurch,who presented hiifi with a camera and outfit, as a token of esteem. Word has been received of the promotion to sergeant and arrival in Egypt of Mr .Vic, Turner, late of The Sun. Mr J. Beadhead, curator of the Ash-' burton Domain, who. is leaving to join the Ambulance Forces, was presented by the Domain employees on Tuesday afternoon With a money-belt and soldier's outfit. Mr Beadhead was farewelled by the congregation of the: Church of Christ in the evening, and; was presented with a pair of field-: glasses. During the evening Captain G. Hefford unveiled hj, roll of honour which ; had been placed in the church in mem-j ory of members of the congregation : who had gone to serve the Empire. Mr j Beadhead left Ashburton for Palmer-: ston North last evening.

Messrs F. B. Staples (Wellington) F. McNqe (Burnham), T. .Kennedy (Sydney), and.W. Washbourne are visiting Christchurch, and are staying at Coker's Hotel. ( Detective Eade lias been advised that his son, Driver W. J. Eade, of the NewZealand Battery, , is convalescent at Alexandria. This is the. first intimation that Detective Eade has received tfiat his son was wounded. Mr Sturnee, formerly of the Union Company's service, who was one of the survivors British Bhip Woodford, is amongst those who are now being held to ransom by North African tribes. • Mr Sturnee was third officer of the Tarawera, and left the service to join a Singapore shipping firm.
