SPREYDON MATTERS.
MEETING OF COUNCIL. A meeting of the Spreydon Borough Council was held last evening. Present:—The Mayor (Mr W. H. Winsor), Crs E. Clarke, W. J. Elliott, D. Williamson, E. O'Rourke, G. H. Rudd, E. Ilayes, A. Manhire, R. H. Taylor. The Finance Committee's report showed that the' district fund account was in debit to the amount of £1375 3/4, and the pit account was £SB 3/2 in credit. The council was recommended to transfer Ul9 credit balance in the pit account to the district fund account.—The report was adopted.
The Works Committee reported, with regard to a letter from the! Spreydon Burgesses' Association concerning work on Lincoln Road, Jerrold and Barrington Streets, Domain Terrace, and River Road, it had decided to reply to the effect j that such would be considered when! finances permitted. It had also j cided to write to the Addington Police to the effect that the council had jurisdiction over that part of! Lincoln Road from Jerrold Street to Spreydon Bridge. The committee had also agreed to write to the Public Works Department with'regard to poles being allowed to block channels in several streets.—The report was adopted. It was agreed that the Waimairi County Council should be'' asked whether it would share the cost of watering Lincoln Road. A petition was received from eight ratepayers of Domain Terrace asking the courtcil to complete the channelling and asphalting in that terrace. They pointed out that the previous council had recommended that the work should be done. Cr Williamson moved, in accordance with notice: —"That the previous council's recommendation be carried out." He pointed out that the ratepayers of Domain Terrace had paid rates on the borough's £21,800 loan, and he considered that the council had acted dishonestly in taking their rates, and not doing the work asked for. Cr Manhire moved an amendment:—"That the x work be done when finances permit," and pointed out that the borough's finances needed conserving at present, and that other streets were more urgently fn need of attention. The amendment was carried by five votes to three. Cr Williamson also moved:—"That the recommendation of the previous council concerning "the metalling of Edinburgh Street be carried out." An amendment by Cr Manhire, Similar to that ,in the previous amendment, was carried. Cr Manhire had given notice of a motion:—"That the works necessary to put Dunn and Leitch Streets in proper order be put in hand at once," but he withdrew this, in view of the state of the council's finances. ! Cr Rudd moved:—"That the sum of £4O be expended on putting Selwyn Street in order, and also that Bletsoe and Redruth Avenues be put in order at once," but failed ;to obtain seconder to the tiaotioii.
