PHILOSOPHICAL INSTITUTE.
ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Philosophical Institute of Canterbury was held last evening at Canterbury College. The president (Mr A. Dudley Dobson) occupied the chair. There was a good attendance of members. .The annual report and balance sheet (which were published in Tuesday's Sun) were adopted. Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follow:—President, Mr L;| Birks; vice-presidents, Messrs A. D. Dobson and«R. Speight; hon. secretary, Mr A. M. Wright; hon. treasur-. er, Dr C. Chilton; hon. librarian, Mr E. G. Hogg; council: Messrs R. M. Laing, G. E. Archey, L. P. Symes, Drs F. W. Hilgendorf, C. C. Farr, F. J. Borrie; representatives on Board of Governors of New Zealand Institute, Dr F. W. Hilgendorf and Mr A. | M. Wright; hon. auditor, Mr G. E. Way. I The following papers were then read: "Studies 011 the Lime Requirements of Certain Soils," Mr L. J. j Wild; "The Succession of Tertiary Beds in the Pareora District," Mr M. Ci Gudex; "Notes From the Canterbury College Mountain Biological Station," comprising "The Physiography of the Cass District," Mr R. Speight; "The Plant Associations in the Immediate Neighbourhood of the Station," Dr L. Cockayne and Mr C. E. Foweraker; and "Some Economic Aspects of the Montane Tussock Grass Lands," Mr A. H~ Cockayne.
