TURF TOPICS.

Flying Start has been galloping very attractively at Riccarton lately, and he should get on the winning list at the holiday meetings. J. Lorgelly, whose past efforts have been mainly directed to the education of trotting horses, is at present handling a rather useful looking four-year-old son of Golden Knigth and Pensive named Caper.

Bore's name was omitted from the list of acceptors in the -Farmers' Hack, Handicap at the Hororata Racing Club's Meeting. Yesterday's contest for the Feilding Stakes marked the fourth occasion on which a two-year-old has triumphed in that event. The fullbrother to Desert Gold showed very fair form in his essays at Riccarton last month, and it came as something of a surprise to find him less fancied than Bimeter, Nystad, and Tino Atua for yesterday's race. Mr E.-H. Gorton has been appointed to act as stipendiary steward "at the Methven Racing Club's annual meeting next week. Judging by his form in the St. Andrew's Handicap yesterday, Sir Solo will have to make a lot of improvement in the next few weeks to have much chance in the Auckland

Cup. As he was rather backward, however, his Feilding efforts are bound to do the gelding a lot of good. The Greymouth Jockey Club receives entries for its Summer Meeting up till this evening. Montana again let his backers down very lightly in the St. Andrew's Handicap yesterday, and his last" three races must have cost his supporters a lot of money. The Vasco gelding Thaddeus is still in a rather bad way at Wingatui as tjje result of the mishap he sustained at Riccarton. From present indications there is little chance of him racing again before next autumn.

Imarose was the only one of the fancied candidates who made much of a showing in the St. Andrews Handicap yesterday. Victory rested with Maniaroa, who paid a surprisingly good dividend, in view of his form prior to the New Zealand Cup Meeting. Since returning home from the Riccarfon Meeting the well-known Hawke's Bay trainer, R. Gooseman, has been in a rather bad way* His !many Canterbury friends will be pleased to learn that the. veteran is now on a fair way to recovery. Interlude, who showed such promising form in the Aorangi Trial Plate at Feilding yesterday, is a three-year-old daughter of Bezonian and Prelude. This marked her first success, but she should not be long in again catching the judge's eye. Her owner, Mr Speed, is at present in camp at Trentham. During the past few weeks.. the Vladimir mare, Heather, has shown remarkable improvement in her i track essays. As the result of her moderate form last season she was leniently treated at the Marlborough Racing Club's Meeting last month, and managed to capture a race on Both days of that fixture. This entailed a penalty of 161b for the Flying Handicap at Feilding yesterday, bringing her weight up to 8.1. Even this failed to stop her, though it was only by a neck that she got the verdict over a rank outsider, in Coropett. Though the present season's batch of two-year-olds are not accounted a particularly smart lot, three of them acted as place-fillers in the Feilding Stakes yesterday.

Bimeter was made favourite for the Feilding Stakes yesterday, but he failed to get a place. Admiral Drake strained one of his shoulders a few days ago, and had to forfeit his engagements at the Hororata Meeting in consequence. Nominations for the Greymouth Trotting Club's Summer Meeting close this evening. The Auckland Trotting Club will distribute £5250 in stake money at its Summer Meeting, entries for which close on Friday.
