NEW BRIGHTON NOTES.
From Our Correspondent,
The usual weekly report of the Brighton ladies' branch of the Red Gross Society states that Tuesday's meeting was well attended, and much valuable work put through. A parcel of linen was received from Mrs Otley, and one of flannel from Mrs Cook,
An excellent response has so far been made to the appeal for cakes for the New Brighton stall at the River Carnival on December 16. The ladies conducting the house to house canvass find that in many cases the women folk are absent from home when called upon, and many likely givers are therefore missed. The committer would be glad if those ladies who have jiot been interviewed, and are willing to help, would send their donations of cakes to the Council Chambers, New Brighton, on Wednesday, December 15.
The annual Rose and Sweet Pea Show, held in the Pier Hall on Wednesday evening, was an unqualified success, and should do much in the way of instilling a keen interest in the cultivation of flowers in New Brighton. A very fine selection of blooms was put forward, and the promoters have every reason to feel gratified with the support accorded them.
The Wednesday evening parade of the local platoon of the National Reserve was a surprisingly good one, and in the course of a few remarks, PI atoon-Commander F. Ward said that he hoped that the average would be maintained. The shooting committee is being presented with two more buttons for competition among the men. One, presented by Corporal C. March, is for the highest scores (any shoot), and the other, presented by Corporal Kibblewhite, is for the B grade of shooters. On Thursday evening a party from the platoon assembled at the Coun-> cil Chambers for bandage rolling. As showing the improvement they are making, it may be stated that the men, who numbered the same as the previous week, rolled about 350 bandages, an increase of just an 100. A meeting of the Bowling Club Committee was held on Tuesday evening, mainly to discuss the question of the lockers. It was decided to ! make, a charge 0f.3/- per annum for the use of each locker, such charge to cover insurance on members' bowls. A subject that evoked discussion was the allocation of the lockers. It was decided to post an application form in the pavilion for the members to sign. A ballot for the lockers will take place on Saturday afternoon next in the pavilion. Several accounts were passed for payment. Mr L. W. Hudson was appointed treasurer in the place of Mr G. W. Staniland, resigned. The matter of the club's colours was dealt with, and a- report will probably be presented next meeting.
