SEASIDE SUBURBS.

SUMNER-REDCLIFFS.

From Our Ow?i Correspondent,

The second annual meeting of the Sumner Branch of the British and Foreign Sailors' Society was'held in the Parish Room yesterday afternoon, the president (Mrs G. W. C. Smithson) presiding over an excellent attendance. The annual report, which was adopted, showed that, since July, members of the branch had undertaken the visiting of sailors at the Christchurch Hospital regularly; quarterly concerts had been given at the institute (Lyttelton), and that the membership now stood at 40. The balance-sheet disclosed a credit balance of £7 0/9. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, the president thanked the members for the valuable assistance which one and all had given during the year. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows:—President, Mrs G. W. C. Smithson; vice-presi-dent, Mrs J. B. Laurenson; treasurer, jMiss Murly; secretary, Mrs H. J. Marriner; delegates to executive, Mesdgmes Ferguson and W. W. Smith. Mrs Cooper was elected a life member. Mr M. J. Miller (chairman of the Board of Directors), Mr F. Anderson, Captain Marciel, Mrs Blunt, and the superintendent (Mr Booth) addressed the meeting, the speakers congratulating the branch on the successful year and the zeal displayed in connection with the work. Special reference was also- made by Captain Marciel to the good work done by our Navy, and of the part which it was taking in the preserft war. Votes of thanks were accorded the outgoing officers, the hospital visitors, and the Mayor and councillors, who had generously placed a room ,at the disposal of members during the year. Afternoon tea was provided, and musical itemswere given by Mesdames Wilson and McArthur. '

The weekly parades of the Sum-nem-Redcliffs Unit of the Citizens' Defence Corps continue to be well attended, last Sunday Captain A. C. Wilson being in command of about 50 men. A good hour's instruction in platoon drill was given by Sergeant W. A. Smith, the various movements being executed in an intelligent manner. It was announced at the conclusion of the parade that the miniature rifle range would be closed until after the holiday season. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Sergeant R. Piercy for the work he had done in connection with the range. Sergeant Smith stated that he wanted an attendance of at least 64, in order that he might give instruction in advanced drill, and impressed upon those present the riecessity of seeing that the roll number was increased.

The recent recruiting campaign which was held in Sumner and Redcliffs was the means of seven men at least handing in their names for enrolment in the reinforcements, and, if rumour is true, there is a likelihood of many more responding to the call. The borough, however, has done very well, as over 40 of the residents are now serving their country at the front.

A Redcliffs resident who enlisted some two months ago was advised by the doctor to undergo an operation before he could be accepted. He, has just come out of hospital after a stay in that institution of 49 days, and, although feeling somewhat weak, is anxious to get away with the reinforcements at an early date. The sunshine recorded for the week, ending November 21 was 49h 40m, as compared with 50h 40m for the same period last year. On the 17th and 21st over 10 hours* sunshine were recorded, and the lowest reading for the week was 2h 20m, recorded on the 16th.

The members of the Bowling Club played their first match of the season last Saturday against Sydenham, but lost by the narrow margin of 12 points. The weather was too boisterous to make the match a true test, many of the players playing in macintoshes, while some sheltered under umbrellas for the greater part of the afternoon. To-day they are playing United, at Sumner. During the week the Handicap Singles and Doubles have been played, with the following results: — Singles—lHingworth (5) defeated W. Raphael (scr.); Mitchell (4) defeated J. S. Neville (5); R. Gibbs (4) defeated Booth (5); Booth (5) defeated S. Harris (6); Hampton (3) defeated G. F. Allen (7); F. Wooler (6) defeated E. Fox (1); F. Sarney (12) defeated Wilson (8); L. Sarney (12) defeated Miss Hunt (20); L. Sarney defeated C. White (12); L. Sarney (12) defeated S. White (14); C. White (12) defeated R. Ogier (14); S. White (14) defeated Miss Hunt (20); S. White (14) defeated R. Ogier (14).

- On Tuesday next a concert will be held in the Town Hall in aid of the local Red Cross Funds. A good programme has been arranged, and the result should be a welcome addition to the funds.

During the week the points for the Tramway Causeway have been put

in at the eastern end of the line. The stone is now being tipped at each end, the work seems to be well forward.

On Wednesday next the annual meeting of the Sumner branch of the Royal Life-Saving Society will be held in the pavilion. The life-sav-ing reels have been placed in position along the beach, and arrangements made for patrols during the bathing season. A start has been made with the formation of Campbell and Duncan Streets. This is a work which has been promised for many years, and residents in the locality are pleased to see that at last something is being done to improve that part of the borough.
