CONCILIATION COUNCIL.
LEADLIGHT AND GLASS WORKERS. A sitting of the Conciliation Council was held this morning to consider an application: from the newlyformed Christchurch Leadlight and Glass workers' Union /or the settlement of an industriai dispute. ; The union'is 1 statement of claim asked for a 44 houfi week, commencing at 8 a.m» and ceasing at 5 p.m. on five days of the week, and froni: 8 a.iti. to noon oh Saturdays. The wages asked for were 1/6 per hour for journeymen lead-glaziers, plateglass cutters, beyeliers, silverers, arid polishers, and for 'apprentices 107per week for the first year, and thereafter an increase of 5/- per week in each yestr up to-30/- per; week in the fifth year. The proportion of apprentices to journeymen was not to exceed one to every four journeymen, or fraction of four. The other clauses,* relating to overtime, holidays, underrate workers, and preference, were in accordance with, those generally obtaining in inIdustrial awards. The assessors for the union were Messrs P. J. Lee, F. W. Williamson, and G. B. Shilstone; and for the employers Messrs H. G. Bradley, A. Poole, and L. Rase. Mr F. Cooper appeared for the .qmployers; and Mr H. Hunter for thej union. ' | The'counter proposals submitted by the employers provided for 1/3 j per hour for lead-glaziers, cutters, i and bevellers, aridl/H for silverers ! arid polishers. j . After, some discussion in commitjtee the union agreed to accept aj47 I hours week if the employers pay 1/6 [for lead-glaziers and plate-glass cutiters,.l/4i for hand beyeilers, and 1/2 for silverers*, polishers, and machine bevellers. ■; The friattei* was.deferred; The wages for .apprentices werefixed at 8/- for the first year, 12/i for the second, 17/- for the / third, 122/6 for fourth, and 30/- for the fifth year.: It was also agreed that men already receiving more,than the wage fixed should riot have their wages reduced. It was decided also that •t the proportion of apprentices to 'journeymen should be one to one, 'this offer to be.conditional on the I employers conceding the 1/6 per j hour asked for in the union's claims. j Discussion on the question of j wages was resumed, and no agreement being reactied it was .decided J that the sitting should.be resumed j in the evening.
