RECRUITING.

MEETING AT LEESTON. , ADDRESSES BY DR McNAB AND f MR ISITT. ' Considering, the brief notice given '•! to the people of; Leeston, the recruit- i ? ing meeting held in the township last ; evening by the 1 HonvDr> Ri MeNab; ?M.P., and MrL;,M. Isitt, Maunder Lthe auspices of the North Cantcr- '! bury Recruiting Board, was an unqualified success. With the usual itendency of country audiences, to • : take their time, the Leeston residents mustered only about 70 when ' the meeting commenced,[but -before ; Mr Isitt, who was the first of. the ; principal speakers, had been speak- ' ing for a quarter of an hour, the hall ; was comfortably filled. ; An earnest .'. attention and manifest enthusiasm ;on the part of'the audience indicated j that the Leeston people are not lackin patriotic fervour. Mr Isitt's address necessarily, fol> ;lowed similar lines to those which he adopted at Rakaia. He dwelt upon : the seriousness of the military position, which, "\yhile it save rio cause j -for pessimism, did call for individual 'sacrifice arid personal, effort. He • pointed out that if Britain ha,d mud;dled through in previous conflicts ::"that might well have been, because -i'she was opobsed to greater muddlers "sihan herself! But her "forces were -dealing now with a nation which j jhad'reduced war to a fine art, and! military or.£?amsfvtion toj ;|swch a pitches, the .world had never; .'known before. With Germany, oc-j : Mcupving Belgium, rooted in French J and ; menacing;;the very;: £'heart of Russia, 'we could not "dismiss] fithe position bv saving that; we. sbfll-| Fmuddle through. We were in for the j I struggle of -our-;livesi—ind'oed; for a ■(struggle for our lives—and he called every able-bodied single man in Leeston to plav the-game and at all' ; risks and sacrifices volunteer ttf the | country's service. He urged parents ■ ; to encourage their boys to go.
