FIGHTING IN THE EAST
FURTHER RUSSIAN SUCCESSES, VILLAGES AND PRISONERS CAPTURED. The High Commissioner reports: LONDON, October 22 (5.50 a.m.) . Petrograd reports that in the Jakobstadt region the Germans, after a obstinate fight, were beaten at Russiaky, losing 220 prisoners. In the Pripet region a number of villages were captured below Ratolovka, and 400 prisoners taken. The Germans near Kolko, on the Styr, were thrown back, with enormous losses. The Germans used explosive bullets in the fighting in the Styr.
RIGA IN PERIL.
GERMANS' NORTHERN ADVANCE. PETROGRAD, October 22. The latest telegrams suggest that. German reinforcements are endangering Riga. They have reached Olai, 12 miles from Riga, and heavy fighting is going on on the plateau of Olai, dominating the marshy plains oh both sides of the MitauRiga railway. The path of the German advance is hampered by thick woods, intersected by swampy streams. \ The Germans have also reached Dwina, at Borkowitz, 18 miles upstream from Riga.
