A NEW GRAMOPHONE.

THE AEOLIAN-VOCALION. There is present in Christchurch just now Mr Alexander Law, representing the Pianola Company, of London, New York, and Australia, and representing in particular that branch of the firm that has to do with the Aeolian-Voca-lion type of gramophone. The Aeolian-Vocalion represents something quite new in gramophone construction, and the Graduola, which forms one of its principal innovations, is certainly quite new. These instruments, beautifully mounted, are designed to produce a tone control that perfectly supplies the element of variation so greatly needed in the gramophone. Particular pains have been expended to obtain distinct rendering of the partials of tone, to reproduce accurately the distinctive notes of the violin and clarionet, and to make orchestral music clear in all its instruments instead of giving an indistinguishable conglomerate of sound that so frequently issues from gramophones as orchestral music. The same thing applies to band music, and the effect is to reproduce sounds with the very minimum of loss of natural effect. The Graduola offers an effective and musically correct means of tone control, and enables the person operating the gramophone to put his own interpretation on the selection. The Graduola, the invention of a Sydney man that an American company took up and improved, operates by means of a wire a flexible throat within the instrument, and so gives the gradations of sound desired. The effect of the Graduola is that one redord may be given in quite a variety of ways, according to the manner in which the individual who happens to be operating the machine interprets the music. In a degree it is "playing" the gramophone. The Aeolian-Vocalion is being put on the market locally by Messrs Milner and Thompson, where specimens of the; various cabinets miay now be seen. An; invitation recital will be given.in the'; Alexandra Hall to-morrow evening. In Auckland Mr Lane's recital was attended by 1200 people, and by almostthe same number in Wellington, while' in Wellington also Mr Law gave a recital to his Excellency the Governor.
