LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The weather forecast for to-day is:— The indications are for variable and moderate breezes, but moderate to strong northerly prevailing and freshening. The weather appears likely to be cloudy and unsettled, with rain following. The barometer is falling. July was the third driest month ever recorded at the Christchurch Observatory, there being under a quarter of an inch of rain. In July of last year half an inch of rain fell. >- . '' • I The Avonside Band of Hope held its usual meeting on. Monday, evening, when the programme was supplied by the Band of Hope Union. The chair was taken by Mr G. E. Franklin, who apologised for the absence of the president. The following programme was well received Pianoforte solo, Master L. Rickard; vocal solos, Messrs G. Howe, F. Goodman, O. Harris, and Mr H. Harrington (encored); violin solo, Miss L. Cross; "recitations, Misses H. Caygill, Eileen Leaver, O. Riordan, and Master L. Cummins; dialogue, Richmond Band of Hope. An interesting address was given by Mr McLeod, and the evening was brought to a close with the National Anthem. The Rev Mr Willis moved a vote of thanks to the performers, which was replied to by the chairman.
