EDUCATION BOARD.

TODAY'S MEETING. * The meeting of the North Canterbury Education Board, held to-tlay, was attended by:—Messrs Geo. Rcnnie (chairman), T. W. Adams, C. H. Opie, J. Jamieson, W. H. Collins, W. A. Banks, H; Boyd, E. H. Andrews, and M. Dalziel. APPOINTMENTS. The following appointments were made:—Cashmere, Mrs E. Newnham, first assistant mistress; Leeston, Mr A. W. Green, master; Wakanui, Miss I. Gibson, mistress; Doyleston, Mr C. F. Pratt, master; Rolleston, Miss D. H. White, assistant mistress; Tai Tapu, Miss M. Costello, assistant mis-: tress; Winslow, Mr C. Hicks, master. LEAVE OF ABSENCE. The following leaves of absence owing to illness were granted:— Elmwood, Miss A. Saunders, a month; Pigeon Bay, Miss H. Walker, three weeks; Ashburton Forks, Mr H. N. Lucas, master, was granted leave of absence on the usual conditions, in order to join the Reinforcements for the Expeditionary Forces. i The application of M. A. H.| Guiney, a student in training, for leave of absence in order to join the Expeditionary Forces, was granted on the usual conditions. / The report was adopted. TECHNICAL TRAINING. The Normal School and Technical Committee reported on several matters. The Christcliurch East . School Committee forwarded a strong protest from the headmistress and her staff at the Main Infant School, against the erection of a new Manual Training Centre at the corner of Barbadoes and Gloucester Streets.— The protest was received. A letter was received from the Christcliurch City Council, covering correspondence with reference to the proposed seed campaign, and suggesting that the school children should be organised for the purpose of growing and gathering grass seed. —lt was resolved that the board approve of the efforts made to promote a seed campaign, and that a copy of the circular emanating from the Auckland "Weekly News" be sent to each School Committee, supplemented by any practical suggestions the Chief Inspector of Agriculture should see his way to make. The report was approved. BUILDINGS. The Buildings Committee report stated: A letter had been received from the department intimating that there appeared to be 8G schools at or over the estimated age of 361 years that required early replacement, and asking what arrangements the board had in view to meet year by year the demands arising on this account. Information regarding other schools that might require rebuilding during the next five years was asked for, also a list of the schools or classrooms that had been rebuilt since 1903. The architect was instructed to have the required return prepared and to engage any additional assistance necessary.

A letter was received from tke committee drawing attention to ttc inadequate accommodation at the - Phillipstown School. It was agreed to rent the adjoining Sunday school building, if suitable and available. Failing this arrangement, a temporary building is to be erected. A letter was received from the Opawa School Committee strongly protesting against the proposal ta take additional land for road widening purposes. It was agreed to support the committee and to inform the Heathcote County Council that the board could not see its way to part with any more land. A deputation from the St. Albans School Committee had waited on the committee, with reference to the inj adequate accommodation. It [ was agreed to proceed with the erection of a shelter shed, to be used for school purposes until the end of the year, when the committee would refund half the cost. Tenders are to be called for the work. The school committee not being satisfied with the proposed lavatory accommodation in the front and side porches, the architect was directed to con-, sider the question of a separate building and to make enquiry as to the cost of an electrical pump, in order to conserve the water supply. A deputation from the Somerficld School Committee had waited on the committee with reference to the school accommodation and inadequate water supply. It was agreed to act on the committee's suggestion and improve the temporary building by having it lined up to about 7ft and more, ventilators and skylights put in, the number of skylights to be left to the architect. The architect was directed to see what further steps could be taken to improve the water supply. The "report was adopted.
