DR VALINTINE APOLOGISES.

HOSPITAL BOARD'S DIGNITY. Much solicitude for the dignity of the North Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was shown by members of that body when, at their meeting last month, they learned that Dr T. H. A. Valintine, InspectorGeneral of Hospitals, had written direct to the lady superintendent of the Christchurch Hospital for information concerning nurses' hours of duty, instead of sending the communication through the board. It was decided then that a letter should be sent to Dr Valintine, expressing the opinion that such official communications with members of the board's staff should be made through the board, this course being more conducive to efficiency. Dr Valintine saw the force of the argument. At the board's meeting this morning the secretary read a letter in which Dr Valintine wrote: "I must ask you to apologise to the board on my behalf for having written to Miss Thurston direct, with regard to the staffing of the hospital. I feel sure that your board will realise that at this juncture it is not possible to wholly adhere to the usual routine, and, further, that I would be the very last to do anything that would detract from the value of the board's work."
