OBITUARY.

MR JAMES DOHERTY.

On Thursday last, there passed away, at his residence, Lincoln, one of the oldest residents of the township, in the person of Mr James Doherty/ The deceased gentleman was 68 years of age v and had resided in Lincoln-over forty worked for the contractors who put through the Hornby-Southbridge railway line, and when the Government took over the line Mr Doherty-.went on as a platelayer, later rising to be ganger. The last few years he has lived in retirement. During his long residence in the district he took a prominent part in the public and social life of the district. He was for many years chairman of the Lincoln District High School Committee, a member of the Domain Board, a member of the Public Library Committee, and president of the Athletic Club. He was also chairman for many years of the Mutual Improvement Society. Mr Doherty was a prominent figure as chairman at public meetings, his last appearance in* that capacity being at the patriotic concert, held just after the outbreak of the war. The deceased gentleman was buried in the Roman Catholic portion of the Linwood Cemetery, there being present many members of the St. Patrick's Branch of the Hibernian Society, of which he was a prominent member, and a great number of the residents of the district. Mr Doherty leaves a widow, two daughters, arid', one son.
