THE WEEKLY HALF-HOLIDAY.
To the Editor of THE SUN.
Sir,— Might I be granted a small | space in .your popular paper to £all at- ; tention to the latest "scrap of paper" i issued by the opponents of the Saturi day half-holiday movement. After I strongly advising the people of Christchurch* to vote against Saturday halfholiday, for various reasons, they state in bold letters that the vote will nof | affect the workers in any way, as their holiday is affected by-■■ho- vote; the halfday for factories, offices, and such-like, being fixed by statute. What I would like to know is, under what heading do we shop hands come? Are we not also workers? As everybody knows, the shops have longer hours than any factory or office, and, this being the ease, there is every reason why the workers will be affected by the* vote. Saturday, as everyone knows, has been proved quite a success, and there is no earthly reason why it should be altered to Thursday. Of course the dissatisfied ones are only the greedy money-grabbers, who care more for the paltry penny or two they may be losing than for the health and wel-fare-of their assistants, who are the ones that keep their employer's business going. Let the people of Christchurch- be sensible enough to vote solidly for Thursday's doom, and if Saturday is retained, I am sure they will have no reason to be sorry-they have done so. Although I do not work in an office -or iactory, I think I am fully justified- in signing myself.—l am, etc., , A AVORKER.
