Sir Geoi'ge Clifford returned from the north yesterday. Mr G. Stead arrived from the north by Saturday morning's ferry steamer. Dr Cluston arrived from the north by the Maori yesterday. The Rev Mr Cameron was a passenger by the ferry steamer yesterday. Dr Marshall arrived by the Maori from the north yesterday. Dr Malcolm was a passenger by the Maori from Wellington yesterday. Messrs C. Murray-Aynsley and-C. H. Hewlett arrived from the north on Saturday. Mr A. W. Gaffney, of Melbourne, is visiting Christchurch, and is staying at Warner's Hotel. Messrs G. W. Russell, M.P., and L. M. Isitt, M.l\, returned from the north yesterday morning. Mr G. J. Anderson, M.P., arrived from Wellington yesterday morning, and went south to-day. Herbrughten, the Belgian violinist, has been selected as the first director of the New South Wales Conservatorium bf Music. His salary will be £I2OO liter year—Press Association. News has been received that Major M. Holmes, of Wellington, who left for Egypt as medical officer in charge of the 3rd Reinforcements, has been appointed Surgeon-in-Churge of the Base Hospital at Cairo. Mr C. Myerscough, Mus. Bac., Oxon., | F.R.C.0., has been appointed as the examiner for Trinity College of Music (London) in Newfoundland, Canada, and New Zealand this year, in practical subjects, piano, organ, violin, singing, etc. He will be in New Zealand in September. Mr Myerscough started his career as a t'honster at Manchester Cathedral. Gregov C'hcrniavskv, the famous Russian violinist in charge of the violin class in conjunction with Professor Auer at the Imperial Russian Conservatoire, Petrograd, was wounded the other day at the battle of Czernowitcli. He was fighting Avit.il the Russians. He has been sent to M. Popow's hospital for artists, at Pctrograd, where he is progressing favourably. Grcgor Cherniavsky is the eldest brother of Leo, Jan, and Misehel CherniaAsky. M. PbpoAV is the famous Russian philanthropist.

Lieutenant G. M. Chapman, R.A.M.C., who has received the French decoration for saving life on the beach at Boulogne, is now serving as medical officer to the 2nd Dragoon Guards (Queen's Bays). He is a son of Mr Jußtice Chapman. Dr 11. J. Rawson (son of Mr Herbert Rawson, of Wellington), "who was on the staff of a British hospital ship, has been transferred to No. 2 General Hos* pital at Havre, where large numbers of wounded soldiers, including numerous Germans, are being treated. Mr T. J. Parker, Dunedin manager for the Huddart-Parker Company, has .been recalled to Melbourne. Mr A. Cerutty, of the company 's Wellington office, is to go to Dunedin" as actingmanager, and his place will be taken by Mr Noseda, of the Dunedin staff. Captain H. B. Wheeler, of the New Zealand Staff Corps,, stationed at Kaiapoi, and Officer Commanding Group 11, has received orders to proceed to England for duty with the Imperial Army. He leaves on May 18, and will be accompanied by Mrs Wheeler and family. Nows has been received that Corporal E. F. 11. Knowles, of the New Zealand Field Artillery, in the main body of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, has been promoted to the rank of Sergeant. Sergeant Knowles is the elder son of the Yicar of Amberley. Dr, Bowerbank, whose services have been accepted by the military authorities, has resigned his position as physician on the honorary staff of the Wellington Hospital. The resignation was accepted with regret. Sergeant Harry Davies, of New Plymouth, who left with the first New Zealand Expeditionary Force, is now on his way from Egypt to England. He will probably go to the front as a member of the personal staff of his father, Major-General R. H. Davies. Mr J. G. Goodfellow (Auckland and Christchurch) has been recommended for a commission in the Royal Engineers. lie was successful in obtaining' highest marks, together with the "Bay liss Prize" in the recent A.M.I.C.E. examination held throughout Great Britain. He was formerly a student at the Auckland Grammar School, and of Canterbury College Engineering School. Last year Mr Goodfellow resigned the position of assistant engineer of the Lyttelton Harbour Board to gain experience in England.
