HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLE. The following is the High Commissioner'a cable, dated April 24: — Note. —Quotations,, unless otherwise specified are average market prices on spot. Mutton: The market is very firm, partly owing to the Government buying Australian mutton. Canterbury 6£d, and high as 6sd for best quality lightweight. There is a limited supply of North Island at 6 l-16d, and as high as 6|d for light-weight; ordinary quality 6d, ewes s£d. Lamb: The market is dull and unsettled; Canterbury 8d for ail weights; other than Canterbury 7Jd. Beef: The market is very firm and supplies of American chilled are small. Prices for frozen beef have been affected by large purchases, for the Government, of Australian and New Zealand beef at market. N.Z. hinds, 6&d, fores 6&d; chilled hinds 74d, fores 6sd. Butter: The market is quiet and steady, with a fair demand for best quality, but a poorer demand for the lower grades. Danish is steady at 142/to 144/-. The New Zealand market is quiet at 132/- to 134/-, unsalted 137/to 140/-. Australian =is at 12$/- .to 130/-.' -Siberian is ;in" £air \ demand at 128/- to 130/-. Argentine is at 126/to 130/-. ' : ; v Cheese: There is no, alterationio, the market since last Large ties of United States cheese continue to arrive, but the Government's buying market steady, and prices; have been well .maintained. For New, Zealand cheese there is a dull demand in the usual trade on account of the; high price. The Canadian stock is' small—White 96/- to 98/-, coloured 94/to 96/-. New Zealand is steady— White 93/- to 94/-, coloured 93/-. United States is in good demand—Flats and doubles, coloured, 85/- to 88/-; white 88/- to 90/-. Australian, wllite and coloured, is at'Bß/- to 90/-. The English Cheddar supplies are nearly exhausted and are quoted "at 104/- to' 106/-. Hemp: The market is vory quiet, with nothing doing, and prices have declined. New Zealand good fair grade £32 10/-, fair £SO 10/-. Manilla, £3B;forward shipment good fair £3l 10/-; lair £29 10/-. Manilla £36 10/-. The output from Manilla for the week was 25,000 bales. Hops: The market is very dull and prices have slightly declined for all grades. English 75/- to 105/-; Californian 70/- to 95/-. Wheat: The market is firm; with an improved demand. Canadian-American 64/6 per quarter; Argentine 58/- in any position. Oats: The market is firm, with an improved demand; Argentine 30/- per quarter.
