EXPORT OF MEAT.
THE DOMINION'S NEEDS. YESTERDAY'S CONFERENCE. PRIME MINISTER'S TACT. The conference of those interested in tho export of meat from the Dominion, which was held in Christchurch yesterday, concluded at 4.30 p.m. The conference was attended by representatives of tho stock breeders, freezing companies, and exporters. The Prime Minister (Right Hon. W. I'. Massey) presided.
As reported in the late edition of The Sux yesterday, a committee was elected as follows to fix the price per lb for meat in the works, over-all: —Chairman, Sir Geo. Clifford; farmers' representatives, Messrs C. H. Ensor, G. W. Leadley, and A. Boyle; exporters' representatives, Messivs A; Simni3, W. F. Murray, and H. F. Nicholl.
Mr C. H. Ensor spoke on behalf of the farmers.- He said that the producers of Canterbury were having a bad time at present, and it was the duty of the Farmers' Union to look after thoir interests. The fanners were badly pushed for feed, and x>racticaUy had to sell.
There was some discussion on the shipping question. Mr Massey pointed out that lie had no control over the supply of ships, but he promised to conault with the Board of Trade with a view to obtaining more ships from the Dominion, with a particular view to relieving congestion in the south. Great appreciation was expressed by several of those present at the way in which Mr Massey conducted the meeting. The contending parties were guided through some difficult moments with both tact and firmness, and all agreed that Mr Massey had made an admirablo chairman.
