TURF TOPICS. Though there has been a considerable woeding out in the Thompson Handicap, quite sufficient horses stand their ground to ensure a splendid race, ; Emperador *s defection suggests that -the Challenge Stakes is to be his mission, and Bonny Helen may be reserved for the Trentham Gold Cup on the second day. Pavlova stands her ground, but she has a full share of weight, and the prospects of Chortle, Ladoga, and Sauci seem preferable. The inclusion of Sauci in the list points to Bonny Dream being the Yaldhurst representative in the Challenge Stakes, and her meeting with Flying Start and Emperador will be of particular interest in view of Riccarton happenings. What a rare chance she would have had at 7st 9ib in the Plunket Nursery Handicap, but evidently Mr Stead intends flying at higher game. Rinaldo is reported to have gone, on the right way since racing at. Wanganui, which means that he should be just about at his best. This must leave him with a rare chance of for there is no doubt about his being a racehorse. Indigo is sure to have plenty of friends, as win Red Book and Banksia, both of whom should be well suited by the distance. The attractions of the South Can-: terbury Jockey Club's meeting evidently appeal to M. Hobba more than do those of the Trentham fixture, and he intends taking a serviceable; field .to the southern gathering, in lieu of going north.
| There will be a general exodus of Ricearton-trained horses by to night's boat for Wellington, in view of next | week *s meeting at Trcntham. | Emperador has been withdrawn from both the Thompson Handicap and Kailway Handicap at the Wellington meeting. Evidently his mission is to be the North' Island Challenge Stakes, in which he will again have the opportunity of measuring strides with his Riccdrion conqueror, Flying Start. The Australian Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting will be brought to a conclusion on Monday, when the chief item of interest will be the A.J.C. Plate; the- most valuable long-distance weight-forage event of the gathering. Should Mountain Kmight face the starter he can be expected to add further to his owner's banking account, and it will probably be the colt's last appearance this season. The Wellington handicapper 5 appears to have taken an undue liberty with Multiply in the Railway Handicap, that is, if the weights as" telegraphed are correct. At 7st "131b th« Gisborhe representative is particularly well treated, especially when his brilliant achievement, in the Courtenay Welter is taken into account. Through Gold. Soult he comes out very well, for though lie finished in front of that colt in the Great Autumn Handicap, he is >o.w set to meet him on 81bs better terms: It looks as if Mr Coyle overlooked the fact that Multiply carried a 71b penalty in the Great Autumn Handicap. The North Canterbury Jockey Club intends carrying out extensive improvements to its course, which, when completed, will bring it right up to date. The fact of Croesus having been withdrawn from both his engagements at the Wellington Racing Club's meeting suggests -that he-has gone- off as the result of. his efforts at Riecarton.
Specialform is not to be sent to Wellington, but she will be seen out at Timaru, where she looks to have a good chance of success in the Timaru Cup. The South Canterbury Jockey Club receives acceptances for its Autumn meeting up till this evening. .. No less than four New Zealanders, in Bcrcola, Merrimax, Silver King, and Home Rule, are engaged in the Second Steeplechase at Randwiek on Monday next. As Cloutaft, who is to be brought over to the Dominion shortly, is also in the field, the race should give the handicappers a good line as to the merits of New Zealand and Australian form. : .;. .
Garlin, the Doneaster Handicap winner, cost his present owner . (Mr J. Wren) 2000SOVS. .As the result of a great achievement in a welter handicap at Hawkesbury a week - bef ore ( the A..J-C. meeting", ho was rushed into the position of first favourite for the- big sprint event. : Shortly before the last mail left England Cavalry and Flippant were shipped to Australia. Last season )b 6th were trained by 111 Woottou. A meeting of the committee of the North Canterbury .Jockey Club was .held in Rangiora last evening to consider a proposal to effect certain improvements in the club's course. It was suggested that the course should be top-dressed and the committee arranged to meet at the course for the purpose of inspection at an early date.
The Thompson Handicap candidate Pavlova created a very favourable impression at Treutham on Thursday morning in a gallop with her stable companion Goldstveam. She is looking very well and is one of the fancied candidates for Wednesday's race. Tree Lucerne is reported to have gone sore just before he was to; have been shipped to Riecarton. As a result lie may have to forfeit his Treutham engagements also. The Masterton Racing Olub made-a profit of £4OO over its recent meeting. Botanist, a cast-off of the -Chokobore stable, is expected to show improved form at. Treutham next week. The Porirua team for the Wellington meeting will comprise Pavlova, George, Martyress, Coldstream, Stepney, Gold Soult, Belasco, Ngapata, Agatha Green, and Scrutineer. S. Reid will have the mount on Ladoga in the Thompson Handicap. Though Bonny Helen did not get on the winning list at Fcilding, she is expected to be quite at her best by the time the Wellington meeting comes round.
Reputation is to be taken across to Australia in the course of a few weeks to compete at the big spring meetings. His early arrival at Randwick should get him thoroughly acclimatised, and also enable hiin to race at some of, the earlier fixtures.
Ladoga is one of the most fancie 3 candidates for the Thompson and on his Riccarton form he shou- i certainly run prominently. TweU;' months ago he won the Wellington xa - after acting, as runner-up to Bronze * • th.e Great Autumn,33[a»dicap. , Will hi... Tory repeat itsfelff f-cl ; ; Out of its original-five represent tives the a stable still has Pa. lova, Coldstream, and Belasco standi* .; their ground in the. Thompson Hand--cap.
Sun lock, the winner of last season t j Liverpool Grand National Steeplechase, strained his quarters by slipping a fe.v days before this year's race, and wkj regarded as an unlikely starter. .Notwithstanding that many rac«; meetings were abandoned in the Unite a Kingdom owing to the the toku net value of stakes won last year wai*: In England, £468,204; in Ireland £4o,oßyj and Scotland, £4365; again*.*; tively. The number of horses that xasi in the different races last year was 390k, agaiast 4055 in 1913. TEMPLAS.
