HEATHCOTE WILLIAMS SHIELD. TIMARU BATTING COLLAPSES. At the end of yesterday's play in the Heatheote Williams Shield match, between Christchurch Boys' High School, holder of the shield, and Timaru. High School, the Christchurch team had scored 498 runs in the first innings, and the Timaru team had two wickets down for 74 runs.
After resuming this morning, N. Thomas and B. Thomas carried the score to 137 for three wickets, when B. Thomas was bowled by a " trimmer M from Nightingale. Aitchison, captain of the Timaru team, was out lbw to the next ball. Day was run out in trying to sneak a single, at 172. A few minutes later N. Thomas, who was in sight of a century, went out to a ball from Guiney, missed, and was smartly stumped by Milliken. Thomas had batted very well, with good scoring strokes on both sides of the wicket. He gave only one chance, and that to deep square-leg, when he was in the fifties. Six wickets were now down for 172 runs. The wickets fell quickly, and the innings closed at 178. Nightingale finished with an average of six wickets for 5."» runs. At one time he had only one for ;»1, but he had had a catch missed off his bowling. The Timaru boys therefore had to follow-on. They made a bad start in the second innings, Herdman being bowled when only five runs had been scored. When the luncheon adjournment was taken, four wickets were down for 20 runs, the batsmen who had been dismissed being those who had been the most successful in the first innings. The procession !was continued after lunch, wickets falling fast, and the whole side was soon out for 40 runs, leaving the Christchurch High ( School the winner by an innings and 280 runs.
