The monthly meeting of the Lyttelton District High School Committee was held on Monday evening. The North Canterbury Education Board notified that an examination of pupils in Standard YI. for proficiency certificates would be held on December 14. It was decided to write to the Board applying for an additional assistant, as the new Education Act, which comes into force on January 1, 1915, provides for an additional assistant for a school of the grade of 450-500. Miss E. E. Rankin was selected for recommendation to the board for appointment as assistant mistress. The headmaster's report stated that the daily average attendance for the last month had been 479, and the number on the roll 512, including ten in the secondary department. It was decided to hold the annual concert and picnic at an early date. The school will close on December 23 for the summer vacation. Messrs W. T. Lester and J. Pitcaithly were appointed a visiting committee for next quartdf. The little village of Shillingstone, in Dorsetshire, - with a total population of 575, has sent 66 men to the colours.
