PERSONAL.

Mr J. Martyn, of Cambridge, is at present in Christchurch. He is staying at the Clarendon Hotel. Messrs A. M. Redstone (Sydney) and H. A. Jenkins (Wellington) are amongst the guests staying at Warner's Hotel. . / Visitors to Christchurch staying at the United Service Hotel include Messrs 6. A. Greenwood (Ashburtori), J. McDonald (Dunedin), and H. Friedlander (Ashburton). The .Hon. D. Buddo arrived from the north' this morning, and went on to Rangiora. Mr Buddo has made a good recovery from his illness, and though he has declined in weight he hopes to make the deficiency up after the elections. Mr W. Y. Craske, for the past four and a half years manager of the Union Steam Ship Company's Lyttelton branch, who is on transfer to Invercargill, was the recipient of a presentation from Lyttelton business and shipping people and the staffs of the Christchurch and Lytteltort offices of the Union Company this morning. The Rev. E. Eliot Chambers presented Mr Craske with a Chesterfield couch and a silver cigar case. ' Complimentary specifies were made by. Messrs D. Comer (Railway Department), D. B. Rhind, and J. W. Watkins (Union Company).. Mr/Craske goes..-south by..the. Tarawera to-night. Mr W. H. Hale, for many years chairman of the Kowai Road Board and County Council, was entertained on Saturday at Balcairn by the members of the council and staff. In proposing the health of Mr Hale, Mr McLean, speaking as a member of the council, said he was very sorry indeed that circumstances had occurred whereby they would not be able, for a time at any rate (he hoped the time would be a short one), to have Mr Hale for chairman. Mr McLean referred iri glowing terms to the way in which the late chairman of the council had always discharged his duties, and the amount of time he had given to matters affecting the roads and bridges in the county, especially the Waipara traffic bridge, he being the prime mover in carrying this work into effect. Messrs J. Rowe, W. A. Nicliolls, T. Hanna, and W. A. Mathers (members of the council), Mr Hickman (surveyor) and Messrs James and Williams (of the working staff), endorsed Mr McLean's remarks.
