Messrs F. Leitch and L. Miles arrived from Dunedin yesterday. They are staying at the United Service Hotel. -
Messrs W. Reece, J. Jamieson, J. P. Newman, and Dr Levinge, directory of the Westport Stockton Coal Company, left for the West Coast this morning on a visit of inspection to; the mines. Captain H. Makepeace, whose ship, '.the. Kaipara, was sunk by the Kaiser Svilhelm der Grosse, has been appointed to the command of the new Federal liner, Middlesex. At the annual meeting of the Philosophical Institute of Canterbury, held, last evening, Dr Jean Charcot, the' French Antarctic explorer, was elected an honorary member; Mr ,T. 11. Shaw, claims clerk in the Christchurch office of the Union Steam Ship Company, has been transferred to Ilobart, as chief clerk there. His place in the Christchurch office has been taken by Mr H. Aplin, from Sydney. J Mr Ryan, chairman of the South Australian Education Commission, has arrived at Sydney after making enquiry into the New Zealand educational system. .He does not consider that the Dominion is ahead of Australia.—-Press Association.
Miss Harband, of the London Missionary Society, who has been' on furlough for about eighteen months, left oil her return to Madras, India, by the ferry steainer for the north last evening.
Messrs J. 11. Whittaker, A. Scott, and J. H. Musson, of Wellington, E. C. Thompson, of Auckland, and J. A. Okerbloom, of ' Melbourne, arei staying at. the Clarendon Hotel. They arrived in town this morning.

UNION STEAM SHIP CO. ANNUAL REPORT. Press Association. DUNEDIN, December 3." The annual report of the Union Steam Ship Company states that after making provision for depreciation on plant, the net profit for the twelve months, including interest on investment and transfer fees, amounts to £116,598. After deducting interest on debentures, and interest on dividends paid in May last, there is left at the disposal of the shareholders the sum of £58,250, which the directors recommend should be appropriated as follows: To balance of dividend on preference shares, 2£. per cent, on £3,000,000, making 5| per cent, for the year, £27,500; dividend on 100,000 ordinary shares, 2£ per cent., making, with the interim dividend of 2£ per cent, paid in May, 5 per cent, for the year, £25,000; balance to be carried forward to next year, £5750 13/6; total, £58,250 10/ G.
