CHRISTCHURCH SOUTH AND BIBLE IN SCHOOLS.
Sir, —It is rumoure'd that Ml* Ell is not in--favour, of a referendum on'the Bible-in-sehools. To those who-' felt that as a churchman his sympathy.'was sure to be' with the Bible-in-Schools* League, and with that large portion of the public who, though not members of the league, are supporters of its tenets, the rumour _ is most disconcerting. Churchworkef s have rallied well to his support in the past, but if he is now siding with those who oppose the aims of the league, it is certain that large numbers will feel constrained to support the Reform candidate who is'known to be in favour of a referendum on this question, as apart from polities the generality of people are believers in the good influence of the Bible*as a safeguard, especially for the young. Compal-atiyejy few are really versed referred to, but. the fact 1 that the members of a certain religious body are opposed to the aims of the is •< sufficient to range among its supporters all" who are not so situated. To clear the air, Mr Ell, the Liberal, and Mr Hughes, the Reformer, should speak out speedily and without ambiguity, so that electors may vote with a full understanding of the position. —Yours, etc., Nov. 26/14.
