BIBLE IN SCHOOLS.
At a meeting of the Canterbury Executive of the National Schools Defence League, held in the 'Y.M.CiA. Rooms on Monday night, the following, resolution was passed:—"That the Canterbury branch of the National Schools' Defence League rejoices to ;after the first judicial enquiry into; the merits and demerit's of the proposed scheme' of religious instruction inschools, and into' the 1 methods which the' Bible-in-Schools League has used during the campaign, the Parliament of New .Zealand has, by a majority of 46 to 17, repudiated the proposed scheme, and approved of the present ; system. The further attempts' of the Bible-in-Schools League to import this into the coming elections,is to be regarded as an evidence of the folly and mischief of trying to make matters (of religion, become matters of political controversy. It is hoped* that the- Bible-in-Schools League's last effort will be as emphatically rejected as was their main effort."
It was also decided to urge all supporters of the present system: — ■ (a) Not to vote for any candidate pledged to support the Re- .. ligious Instruction Referendum Bill, and (b) To "vote, as far as they , tiously can,; for tliose candidates pledged to vote against such a Referendum Bill. Arrangements were made for submitting questions* ftx candidates:
